Nutritional Values: From Formulation to Labeling

By 17 April 2024No Comments

The formulation of food products using numerous raw materials presents a significant challenge in terms of nutritional complexity. Consequently, manually calculating nutritional values becomes a tedious and error-prone task. In the face of this complexity, beCPG emerges as a valuable tool by automating nutrient calculations.

This systematic solution ensures optimal accuracy and reliability of nutritional information, thus aligning products with stringent nutritional labeling requirements.

How does beCPG’s PLM calculate nutritional values?

When creating a recipe in beCPG, the software automatically calculates the nutritional values of the finished product using the nutritional data entered at the raw material level. This process also automatically accounts for losses due to processing, such as cooking. Nutritional loss percentages can also be manually added. The software adjusts the nutritional values accordingly, providing a more realistic estimate of the product’s nutritional composition.

Additionally, beCPG integrates recognized nutritional databases, such as CIQUAL and USDA, facilitating the import of nutritional values if needed.

After incorporating these elements for each raw material, the software accurately delivers the final nutritional values of the product per 100g and per serving. Furthermore, beCPG goes a step further by calculating and displaying the percentage of the daily recommended intake per serving for each nutrient. This approach provides a comprehensive perspective on the nutritional contribution of the product.

The platform also enriches this analysis with a detailed visualization of each nutrient, allowing companies to refine their formulations.

International compliance: Management of tolerances and rounding by beCPG

The beCPG software is specifically designed to handle the complexities of calculating nutritional values, taking into account the tolerance rules and rounding requirements specific to over 50 countries.

In other words, beCPG incorporates the regulatory variations from different countries regarding nutritional tolerances and daily recommended intakes, adjusting calculations to reflect permissible measurement uncertainties. Moreover, the software automatically applies the appropriate rounding rules to the calculated nutritional values, ensuring that the nutritional labeling is not only accurate but also complies with local and international legislative standards. This multinational feature of beCPG simplifies the regulatory compliance process for companies operating in diverse markets.

Customization of nutritional tables on technical sheets

beCPG generates technical sheets that include a nutritional table. This table is adjusted based on the language of the technical sheet. Thus, for each region or country, beCPG produces a customized nutritional table.

For example, for the American market, beCPG creates a “Nutrition Facts” label that complies with the guidelines of the Food and Drug Administration.

Similarly, beCPG develops a “Nutrition Facts” label tailored to the requirements of the Canadian market.
